Another popular suburb of Dayton, the City of Centerville has a population of more than 23,700 people; it is located in Montgomery County, with a small section in Greene County. Centerville earned its name in part because of its location between two rivers and because it’s a central location to cities like Lebanon and Dayton.

Originally, the town’s founder, Benjamin Robbins, spelled the community as “Centreville” in honor of his hometown, Centreville, in New Jersey. The town’s name officially changed in 1900, when the U. S. Post Office switched its spelling to “Centerville.” Nowadays, Centerville is home to the largest group of early stone homes in the State of Ohio. This same cluster of homes later earned a listing on the National Register of Historic Places.

Located close to Main Street and Franklin Street, this old neighborhood of downtown Centerville is called the Architectural Preservation District. It serves as a reminder, a reflection of the “Main Street Downtown” era that shaped American towns and cities during the early 1900s. Built prior to the First World War, most of the buildings in the APD display a diversity of different architectural styles. Their vivid detail of rich craftsmanship has made them an asset to the Centerville community.

On Dec. 2, 1968, Centerville earned the status ‘city.’ Its Town Hall Theatre, which is in the “Heart of Centerville,” has been with the community for more than 70 years. The “Heart of Centerville” also features a quaint selection of local restaurants, boutiques, and other businesses in a historic atmosphere which also includes Ohio’s largest gathering of early stone buildings.
