Having a population of more than 56,000 people, the City of Kettering is the largest suburb of Dayton, Ohio. Kettering is located in both Montgomery and Greene counties. Historians say the area where the City of Kettering sits was first settled in the late 1700s and mid-1800s. However, at the time, it was mainly farmland. Once the population in the area started to grow, it led to the formation of Van Buren Township in 1841. It was not until 1952, however, until township voters approved a move to incorporate into what became the Village of Kettering.

Years later, in 1955, the village’s population reached 38,118 residents, which prompted the village to try to become a city. That same year, on June 24, the official proclamation making it a city came from the state.
Historians say Kettering got its name after the inventor, Charles F. Kettering, who resided there. Kettering’s home is called Ridgeleigh Terrace; the famous inventor lived there from 1914 to the time of his passing in 1958. He was well-known for his many inventions and contributions to the greater Dayton area.

With 20 city parks sprawling out on a combined 284 acres, Kettering is home to the famous Fraze Pavilion. The Fraze Pavilion is a massive outdoor entertainment venue that is the host for the summer concerts of the Dayton Philharmonic.

Kettering is also home to the James S. Trent Arena, which opened in 2005 and has a seating capacity of more than 4,400, in addition to Skate Plaza, a 40,000-square-foot skateboard park which opened in the same year. The skate park was done in collaboration with the city’s famous native son Rob Dyrdek, a national celebrity and professional skateboarder who grew up in Kettering.
